New Zealanders at the 2002 World Mountain Running Championships

11 July 2002 updated 15 & 16 September 2002
The WRMA World Mountain Running Championships will be held on 14-15 September 2002, in Innsbruck, Austria. The event will be of great interest to athletics fans in New Zealand as the country is supplying two stars of the sport - Melissa Moon, current world champion, Jonathan Wyatt, twice former world champion, and several top-ten finishers from earlier world championships.

The championships alternates between 'uphill-only' and 'up-and-down' courses - with this year's to be an uphill course.

15 September - Wyatt wins third World Title (from John Stewart):

Wellington's Jonathan Wyatt destroyed the 2002 World Mountain Running Cup Men's field in Innsbruck last evening, crossing the rain and sleet-swept finish line almost three minutes ahead of the second place-getter.

In taking his third world title, Wyatt triumphed over conditions that decimated the field who left the start line 1300m below expecting the sunny and warm conditions experienced over recent days.

Admitting to team Manager Barry Ellis that he was "...definitley slowing in the legs, and my arms just weren't there ..." for the last section, Wyatt was elated with his win.

"Many of the athletes were in real trouble out there" commented Ellis. "I don't think the organisers were ready for this."

Ellis was also full of admiration for the support provided the men's team by Melissa Moon, whose 22nd placing in the women's event yesterday was a real disappointment to the 2001 World Champion. "Her positiveness, knowledge and effort were amazing," he said.

14 September - The competition timetable for the championship in Innsbruck is as follows:

Callum Hartland finished 16th for New Zealand with a time of 1:11:14.9. In Susa in Italy yesterday Wyatt wom the men's race with a new course record, while Melissa finished 3rd in the women's section behind recent visitor to NZ Angela Mudge. Callum Hartland recorded 8th and Demelza Murrihy 13th in their respective divisions.

11 August - After rebounding from the Commonwealth Games marathon to win the NZ Cross Country title in Christchuch yesterday, Phil Costley stated that was withdrawing from the NZ team for the World Mountain Running Championships. He cited the physical drain from running a hard marathon in warm conditions in Manchester. Wellington's Mike Wakelin named as reserve runner for the men's team will now get a run in Austria. Athletics New Zealand is yet to announce Phil's replacement as team captain.
