| Valerie Adams from Auckland improved her own national shot record in
competition at the World Cup teams competition in Madrid.
Adams started with 17.94m, fouled the second then hit a monstrous 18.40m in the third round, before reaching 17.94m in the last round. The new personal best and New Zealand record, places the seventeen-year-old as a world force at senior level in an event where athletes usually produce their best in their late twenties. The throw bettered her previous record of 17.54 set in June. That progression eclipsed her earlier national record of 17.38 set in February, which surpassed a record which had stood for 37 years.
