19 September - News from Girdwood (courtesy Mike Wakelin): The 5 days we've had here have been clear and sunny but winter's coming and the days start at 0 deg and slowly climb to 15 deg (in the sun) in the arvo. Race day forecasts are cloudy and some wet but probably no snow. The courses are looking tough, starting nr town at ~100m asl they climb the mostly gravel ski trails, and 1 or 2 narrow grassy tracks. Fir trees on the lower slopes become alpine herbfields at the top at 700m asl, just below the Alyeska glacier. The long steep up and flying downs will be a killer on the legs. Carline MacDonald has arrived as an 11th hour replacement for an injured Moana Burt.

18 September - A pre-departure interview with Melissa Moon in online: http://www.coolrunning.co.nz/articles/2003a002.html

7 September - The New Zealand Community Trust today announced a $25,000 support package for the NZ Mountain Running team as it prepares for departure to Alaska and a tilt at retaining its status as one of the two top nations in one of the sport's toughest disciplines. "The NZ Community Trust is has been instrumental in the development of the mountain running squad over recent years" commented Athletics NZ General Manager John Stewart. "Apart from direct support of the team to the worlds each year and our national championships in Wellington this year, they have invested heavily in the future of the sport through assisting with funds for the preparation of our bid to host the 2005 worlds" he added.
