New Zealanders at the 2004 World Mountain Running Championships

25 May 2004 updated 11 September 2004.
The WRMA World Mountain Running Championships will be held on 4-5 September 2004, in Sauze D'Oulx, Turin, Italy. The event will be of great interest to athletics fans in New Zealand as the country has a successful record in the genre and will host the World Championships in 2005.

The championships alternates between 'uphill-only' and 'up-and-down' courses - with this year's to be an uphill course.

News

5 September
A week after running the Olympic Marathon in Athens, Jonathan Wyatt has done the seemingly impossible and won a 4th World Title. See results below.

Report from Mike Wakelin:
A hot first day on the course and not too satisfying for the kiwi junior men and senior women. The juniors had trouble with stitch, particularly Hamish Clareburt who had to walk parts of the downhill. Maybe their expectations were a little high as the strengths of some newly participating countries like Eritrea, Mexico and Turkey is changing the traditionally European dominated mountain running scene. Places aren't so comparable to other years. Hayden McLaren was first kiwi (40+?), Matt Singleton, Bevan Stevens and Hamish Clareburt all toughed it out creditably. Shireen Crumpton was also a little disappointed with her 8th place just not quite feeling it was her best effort (sometimes uphill running is so slow that you feel that). Rachel Penney (25th) and Anna Frost filled in the team well at their first Mt champs, but an injured Belinda struggled through further back.

The second day had more amicable weather conditions (cloudy and cooler). First up was the open race and NZ was well represented by Seaton Meredith (5th), Shireen Crumpton (1st women, just a Sunday run after the race the day before!!), Patrick Meffen, Daniel Clendon, Ross Wakelin, Ben Fouhy and Arthur Klap. The senior men were reasonably satisfied with their races. Brilliant run from Jono in first place, followed by Callum Harland (46th), Alistair Snowdon (62nd), Mike Wakelin (69th), Joe Piggen (84th) and Kim Hogarth (95th) in a field of 154 runners. Bit of an eye-opener for Joe and Kim in their first world mt champs but all ran hard.

The TV had a delayed half hour coverage of the first days racing and live coverage of the mens race. Surely TVNZ/TV3 managed to pick up something for the news at least?? We're off to the prizegiving now to hear our national anthem... heading home tomorrow.

3 September Report from Mike Wakelin:
Race weekend draws near in Sauze d'Oulx, we've moved into the teams hotel and pretty much everyone's arrived. Jono Wyatt is looking good to take his place in the mens team, meaning reserve Seaton Meredith will be lining up in the Open Race. But unfortunately Moana Burt has a back injury and will withdraw to let Anna Frost run for the Senior women. The only other current problem is the womens race tops and all the tracksuits have been captured by customs in Milan after ANZ had to speed mail them - hopefully they'll arrive by the opening ceremony tonight (or it'll be kiwi mufti)??

Otherwise things are going to plan. We've apparently acclimatized to what altitude there is and familiarised with the ups and downs of the course (also familiarised with the towns shops and restaurants and a smidgeon of the lingo). Weather is fine, forecast is sunny.

29 August - the Masters champs were run today on the same course to be used for the open champs next week. News so far is that NZ won the bronze medal in the men's event.

Report from Mike Wakelin:
It was a good day at the masters world mountain running champs, sunny, clear (approx 25 deg C)cool light breeze blowing up the hill, and fine runs from the NZers. Rolling starts for each 5 year age category, 20min apart, starting with 70+ men and women together, but no men 35 to 40 age group. By the finish (8.5km 750m climb) it was a continuous string of mixed ages and styles. Trevor Ogilvy was rapt with his well paced run for third (55-60 age group). Pat Meffan backed up past senior mens world champs performances with a deserved third place in the 45-50 age group. In the same category Paul Forster and Colin Earwacker were a few minutes back. Graeme Pearson in the 40-45 group was similarly placed in a huge field of runners. Our only woman, Leanne Dury drifted back to finish 5th in the 35+ group. Results below

21 July - Athletics New Zealand has announced changes to the teams for the championships. Former world champion Jonathan Wyatt is confirmed for the team - recognising that he will be running just a week after competing in the Olympic Marathon. Wellington runner Mike Wakelin is also named for the team, reaping his reward for a long recent run of excellent form including a win at the Wellington Mountain Running champs. Seaton Meredith has been selected as reserve for the men's team. Not such good news on the women's side with the withdrawal of both Sarah Morgan and Sarah Beresford meaning that NZ will not field a junior women's team this year. Other selectees are Beinda Wimmer, Anna Frost, Matt Singleton and Flynn Morris-Clarke. The updated team is listed below.

25 May - The initial NZ team has been announced by Athletics New Zealand. ANZ have said that the selections are based on performances at the NZ Mountain Champs in Wanaka. Additional athletes may be added to the team based on their previous World Mt. Running performances and form leading up to this event during the early winter.

Previous world Champions in the men's and women's event are in doubt with Melissa Moon unavailable for selection while Jonathan Wyatt has his Athens marathon commitment which is one week prior.
