2003 Training Info
Wellington Training Schedule
16 April 2003
Sadly the winter season has finished so we have pretty much lost access to Newtown Park -
the soccer club have the track on the weekends, and because the floodlights are still
lying in pieces in the top car park it is too dark to train during the week :-(
But don't despair - for velocity junkies in the Wellington region we will be starting
up with gymnastics training during the long dark winter.
I have booked the BGI gym, for 20 weeks from 20 May to
30 September, for the exclusive use of pole vaulters. The sessions are
5.30 to 6.30 on Tuesday nights. The BGI is the best facility we have found
for vault training - it is in Tasman Street, Cooks Hill (behind Wellington High School).
It is a little cramped but the facilities are great for our PV training,
including floor mats for
rolls/extension & crash clearance practice; trampoline, ropes and foam pit
for rockback and clearance drills on the ropes, high bars for swings and
tuck conditioning drills, walls and wall bars for handstand pushups, ie
plenty to keep us going all winter!
Since last year there has been a
slight improvement to the facilities with the replacement/conversion of two
of the ropes into a trapeze, which will create some new possibilities.
I have been trying to get funding for the gym via
one of the local clubs. I've not had much progress so far, so please be prepared to pay $100
for the gym through the winter if they don't come through with any
support. We might be able to do a fund raiser as I mentioned earlier in
the year, as well. The whole series will be 20 weeks at the gym plus a
sess at the track once a month or so when we can fit in with the soccer guys.
We have quite a good relationship with the soccer club and we will be able to get
the occasional session on sunday morning when the soccer guys are playing 'away'.
To newcomers if you would like to try out vaulting this is the ideal time to start,
drop an email to ian@coolrunning.co.nz.
