Please note that the course has changed from previous years! The change is near the end, in that participants will descend from the Eastern Hills to the floor of the Hutt Valley through Hayward's Scenic Reserve. You will NOT go to Wainui Hill.

For the benefit of those who have run/walked the event before, the course changes are shown on the map, the old finishing section is shown in yellow, while the new course follows the red line.

Route Details

All runners will be provided with a detailed route checklist which MUST be carried during the run. The course will be marked with pink paint/chalk ground markings, but be aware that markings can be removed or fade quickly in poor weather. Please familiarise yourself with the route using the map and the following description. If you have any doubts please team up with another participant, preferably someone who completed the correct course in an earlier year (see the names on the results page).

The course is as follows:

  1. Start at the bridge in BELMONT RD., 100m from intersection with SH58.
  2. At Windrest (308 Belmont Rd), continue up gravel road, past the sign saying 'Road ends here'.
  3. Continue up the track and cross the stile which marks the entry to Waitangirua farm.
  4. Follow the main 4wd track through Waitangirua farm - marked with orange ski poles.
  5. Use gates and stiles as necessary to hold to the main track. Do not turn downhill until you have passed the large antenna.
  6. TURN LEFT just past the the antenna (before the gas pumping station), and downhill past the '30' speed limit sign.
  7. Follow the gravel then bitumen road (HILL ROAD).
  8. Water is available at 142 Hill Road.
  9. After #2 Hill Road TURN LEFT down the footpath.
  10. Cross SH2 using the tunnel (turn left at the yellow building).
  11. At the tunnel exit (Belmont School) turn left and follow the footpath.
  12. Take the second tunnel under FAIRWAY DRIVE.
  13. At the tunnel exit turn right up to Kennedy-Good Bridge.
  14. Cross the Hutt River using Kennedy-Good Bridge and continue along Fairway Drive.
  15. Cross High St at the traffic lights, continue straight ahead along DAYSH ST & over the railway.
  16. At the roundabout TURN RIGHT into NAENAE RD.
  17. Take the 3RD LEFT into RIVERSIDE DR.
  18. Take the 1ST LEFT into TILBURY ST & cross Waiwhetu Stream.
  19. Turn IMMEDIATELY LEFT into SUMMIT RD.
  20. At the top of Summit Rd go through the metal gate signposted 'no motor vehicles'.
  21. Proceed up the firebreak to the ridgeline.
    NOTE: Ascending the firebreak you can take the left- or right- tracks, they rejoin at the top.
  22. TURN RIGHT when you reach the ridgeline (ie south towards the harbour) and follow the track.
    NOTE: While on the ridge you must follow the main (wide) firebreak at all times.
  23. TURN RIGHT at the sign 'Haywards scenic reserve' BEFORE reaching the twin antennae.
  24. Descend through the native bush using the zig zag track.
  25. Short run along White's Line East
  26. Turn right to the finish in Te Whiti Park.
  27. Indicative Height Profile

    This height profile was obtained by Brendon Flanagan, using a portable altimeter during the 2003 run (click to enlarge it). Please note that this year's course is different, the last 1km descends to approx. 20m above sea level.
