About Whangamata
Whangamata is one of many pretty resorts on the Coromandel Peninsula, and its 4km of spectacular ocean beach is the jewel in its crown. It's renowned for simultaneously providing some of the best surfing breaks and some of the safest swimming in New Zealand. An added bonus for the safety conscious is that our local Surf Life Saving Club provides a high standard of patrolling during the weekends and summer school holidays from Labour Weekend until Easter. The harbour too is sought after by swimmers, water skiers, kayakers and boat enthusiasts. Fishermen, sailors, snorkelers and divers enjoy treats the majestic Pacific Ocean offers.
Whangamata's resources include: two well-manicured golf courses, tennis and squash courts, bowling greens, and mini-golf. The surrounding bush clad hills have some well-developed tracks and offer even more recreational choices such as bird-watching, visits to historical gold mining sites, tramping and mountain biking.
Our town has 7-day shopping; plenty of accommodation; arts and crafts; and some special action-oriented events:
- Whanga Week (surfboat racing, Harbour Swim, Beach Mile, an old fashioned Miss Whangamata contest; a pub to club run/swim; fun walks and runs). This family-oriented event started 25 years ago and is held from 27th December until January 2nd.
- Beach Hop's five day nostalgia festival in late March evokes 50's & 60's culture and lifestyle, and is now attracting approximately 70,000 enthusiasts.
- The inaugural Fun For Kids (12 year olds and younger) 3-day Festival was held in early July and there are plans afoot for that to continue.
- We look forward to seeing you at the annual Run Walk Festival on 4th September 2010. For more information about Whangamata www.whangamatainfo.co.nz.
