Huntly Half Marathon 1997

Huntly is one of NZ's top half marathons with course records of approx 64 mins (Rex Wilson) and approx 72mins for women. This year, there were 1240 starters in near perfect conditions, approx 15 degrees C, with no wind and a slightly overcast day. Bunce (North Shore Bays Club) went straight to the lead and at 10K had a lead of 30 seconds over Bohmann (in NZ 6 months from Germay) with Aish very close in third. Bunce missed the turn-around at 15K and wasted about 1 minute which allowed others to catch up. He powered away to finish and looked very strong at end.

Bunce, a sub 3.40 1500 runner had a frustrating summer through injury, but hopes for more success on the track this coming summer.

Hannam (Currently without a club) also went into early lead and at 10K was ahead by over 1 minute. Edhouse (NZ mountain running rep) chased hard over the closing stages and looking very strong, almost caught a tiring Hannam. Hannam took the US road scene by storm several years ago, and is making a cautious comeback following illness.

There was an excellent run by 15 year old Claire Watson in her first attempt at the half marathon distance. Given the great racing conditions, many competetitors were very happy with PB times.
