Results: Nelson Striders Half Marathon

13 January 2002
Nelson
The Trevor Ruffell Tusk Trophy, known as the Boar's Jaw will spend six months on the mantlepiece of Helena Franklin and Kim Leighton's lounges after both finished six seconds outside their estimates in yesterdays Royal & Sun Alliance Nelson Striders Handicap Half Marathon.

Peter Hague, Bruce Patrick, and Dawn Pascoe were also within twenty seconds of their guesses, running without a watch while in the 10km walk, but not eligible for the trophy, Fional Holmes beat the lot by being only three seconds short.

The race for fastest time was never an issue once Marc Lidiard got fully wound up and uncoiled his class to record 1hr 15min 21sec. Phil Wright was with him up the Maitai Valley but Lidiards younger legs had to much pace on the return journey. Brian Kemp left in an earlier start pack and got a pleasant surprise with his 1hr 19min 12sec effort, good enough to get him above Wright for second overall with Andrew Martin fourth. Wright's reward was first Master (Over 40) while Alistair Dickson (50-59) and Tony Layzell (60+) won the legends.

Gaye Evans has risen up the women's rankings in the region. Mot many are now in front of her and no one was yesterday. Kiribati visitor, Lisa Zagura, though gave her a serious fright with only five seconds separating them at the end. Pura Staples ran her quickest on the course holding her in good stead for the Buller Half while Dawn Pascoe won't be far behind.

Margaret Hazelwood maintained her mortgage over fellow 50 years plus competitors but now has some more competition if Dallas Dowdell doesn't give up after she receives her Buller Medal next month.

Gillian MacDougall, doing all she can to recapture her past walking form is on the right path and having the jovial Phil Ivamy for company kept out the callenge of Ian McPherson (Christchurch) and Trudy Price.

Amelia De Lorenzo (Wellington) was a class above the other walkering the supporting 10km in under an hour, Des Thornton taking second from a closing Cec Lineham.

A feature of the event this year was the number of overseas visitors taking part with Australia, Belgium, Kiribati, UK and USA all represented.
