The Apiti terrain provides an excellent venue for conditioning runners preparing for forthcoming endurance events. This historical course offers a step up from the traditional long Sunday training run. The steep hills, especially the never-ending Makoura Road (7km.) one, give all runners a thorough workout.
The Apiti Gutbuster has a unique feature requiring each runner to finish between 12.10 and 12.20 p.m. Runners had to select their own starting time to finish in the set time frame. From a field of seventeen starters five managed to finish in the time frame. The five included; Debra Arnold (Feilding Moa), Kym Black, Bruce Eyers, Roger Morrison (Wanganui) and David Penfold (Feilding Moa).
The fastest times were as follows: Neil Mayo (Wanganui) 2hrs19m 53s,Henry Bishop (Wanganui) 2hrs38m, Robert Dabb (Feilding Moa) 2hrs40m35s, Peter Griffin (Feilding Moa) 2hrs44m17s, Tony Devanney (Auckland) 2hrs45m, Ross Cheesman (Wellington) 2hrs50m46s.
