Wellington to Eastbourne
The 22nd Clarrie Gibbons Wellington to Eastbourne run was held on Wednesday 19th February. The race started into a strong northerly wind with the rain sweeping in shortly after 7pm. Fortunately, by the time the rain arrived, competitors had turned for home and the wind was behind them. Bill Trompetter, Simon England and Brendan quirke broke from the bunch early, keeping a steady pace along State Highway 2 and through Petone. Simon broke from the bunch at Lowry Bay with Brendan hanging on 20 metres behind and well in touch through to Days Bay. From Days Bay, Simon was able to extend the lead finishing 27 seconds in front with Bill a minute behind him. Sally Anderson had an outstanding day out to finish in 4th place. Brian Hayes, who had been close behind Sally as he reached Eastbourne, unfortunately missed the turn off to Eastbourne Wharf and spent some time exploring Eastbourne in the rain before finding the finish. Kathryn Blair and Steve Chivers became the first walkers to complete the 23.7km distance, setting a respectable time of 2hrs 52:37.

Congratulations to the competitors who braved the conditions to be part of the event, and thanks to the marshals and supporters who manned drink stops and cooked sausages in the rain. While the weather provided some challenges, the event was very enjoyable and its success will help cement its place in the Wellington Running Calendar.
