Results: The Molesworth Run

The Molesworth is a wonderful and unique wilderness area of New Zealand, very barren but strangely beautiful with climatic extremes that both baffle and amaze. You never know what mood it will show from one year to the next.
This year the rain poured down throughout the preceding evening and into the next morning. The rivers were swollen and the ford on Isolated Flat almost impassable but just when you thought the day would be miserable the mood changed again and The Molesworth presented some of the finest running conditions in years.
The speedy Open Women's combination of Gaela Kilmour, Bridget Baxter, Kerry Wray and Janice Payne took full advantage coming in 4th overall in the competitive 4 Person Team event in a great time of 6:20:45 with Baxter and Wray breaking two of Sue Aviss's Lap records along the way.
The Marlborough Open Men's quartet of Mathew Gale, John Kennedy, John Alexander and Glen Bateman recorded a sub 6 hour time to take out overall honours in the 4 Person Team event, followed by the Pub Runners team of Andrew Perry, Ian Muir, Ross Pickworth and Richard Hendry. The Nelson Veteran Men's combination of Andrew Petheram, Bill Revell, Derek Shaw and Ian Morrison recorded a creditable 3rd place.
This year's Solo field did not include Molesworth veteran, John Thirkettle leaving the event wide open. Local Marlborough athlete Paul Wieland took full advantage to take out overall honours in an excellent time of 8:01:18 but it was a hard fought victory trailing the fast starting John Bayne by 30minutes over the first half of the race. John Bayne was unable to maintain the blistering pace and was reeled in by Wieland over the final stages. The remarkable Wynnie Cosgrove returned after a long 6 year absence to be 3rd over the line and 1st women in a time 8:41:29.
The 2 Person Team race was taken out by the Nelson combination of Gill Thornton and Claire Doris in 8:11:31 followed by Molesworth veterans Ruth Baltus and Sally Nicol in 8:34:30.
And so another captivating day in the high country is over, one in which The Molesworth showed us yet another face but once again treated us kindly. Both Maurice and I would like to thank all who attended and hope you will return once again in 2007 for the 13th Molesworth Muster.
